J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. said on Thursday that its third-quarter profit rose 23.4 percent as the trucking company benefited from an improving economy, though earnings fell short of analyst expectations.

The company earned $52.2 million, or 41 cents per share, for the quarter that ended Sept. 30, up from almost $40 million, or 31 cents per share, during the same period last year. Revenue rose 18.3 percent to $986 million, from $833.7 million a year earlier.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters had been expecting a profit of 44 cents per share on revenue of $985.9 million. Some of the profit shortfall was because of a donation to Arkansas Children's Hospital of $5 million, amounting to 2 cents per share.
