Officials in townships surrounding Carlisle said Friday they would be willing to consider local ordinances banning diesel trucks from idling for long periods.

But, some also said they prefer a single statewide law offering consistent standards across municipal borders; others seemed reluctant to single out the trucking industry.

Carlisle officials directed Solicitor Ed Schorpp to draft an anti-idling ordinance Thursday following a public hearing on trucking in downtown and residential areas.

Dickinson Township Supervisor Dan Wyrick said his township's planning commission has been working on a similar ordinance for the past four months.

"In general, Dickinson supports and is in favor of an anti-idling ordinance," Wyrick said, adding that just what form it might take has not been decided.
