Waggoners Trucking pays $300,000 for pirating software

The nation’s largest family-owned car-haul trucking company has paid $300,000 to settle claims that it was in possession of illegal computer software on its company computers.

On Wednesday, Feb. 21, The Business Software Alliance – a watchdog group representing the nation’s leading software manufacturers – announced that The Waggoners Trucking paid the settlement for having unlicensed copies of Adobe, Microsoft and Symantec software programs.

In addition to making the payment, officials of the trucking company based in Billings, MT, agreed to delete any unlicensed copies, purchase replacement software and strengthen their software management practices, according to a BTA press release.

“The Waggoners Trucking is fully committed to software compliance,” said David Waggoner, the company’s president, in a statement. “We have resolved the issue and will more closely monitor and audit our software to prevent future infringements.”

BSA has become notorious in the computing world for offering rewards of up to $200,000 for qualifying reports of businesses using or possessing unlicensed software programs.
