More truck parking is what professional drivers need, especially in the northeast, this we both know and agree on. But this program has nothing to do with building additional facilities...only wasting money on a project which will not work in our industry. Now if this project was to provide a notification system prior to each truck stop exit with real-time parking availability for that exit...truely helping a driver by preventing his/her exiting when no spaces are available...this would be a good thing for the industry. A system providing information to drivers about truck stops miles away is worthless - a waste of money. And to even suggest the possible application of a reservation system regarding truck parking is just down right ridiculous. This would result in nothing but trouble.

All good, thanks for the clarification.

On the parking notification, can't you just see a couple of tired company drivers duking it out over a parking spot after making a reservation for the same spot?

Yep...

I can also see another driver pulling up for the same spot taking on the winner of the last two...and so on and so on.

It's unrealistic to attempt to try anything of this nature when there isn't enough spots to begin with. The solution is simple, but our government insists to complicate the issue. I'm still trying to understand how they can perpetuate an attitude of safety in the industry, yet not understand safety begins with proper rest.

I have actually come to the belief our government is acting in a manner to create trouble and animosity within professional drivers ranks. They do nothing to assist (holding up bills in committees which will bring transparency to the industry; refusing to address the issue of lost, uncompensated hours at shippers/receivers; unify violation penalties and fines; eliminate redundant background checks; and re-organize third party systems [DAC].) Acting on anything that will create additional problems for professional drivers seems to be the only thing they want to pursue.

Was talking to my wife about this ( former driver ) and she pointed out that this would also be an easy way to cross-check your log books with electronic record, hmmmm.

If you consider Easy Pass, Fast Lane, Pre Pass, toll road/bridge receipts, fuel receipts, restaurant receipts for those that itemize business deductions, shipper/consignee gate logs, bills of laden, repair receipts, and cell phone records, your log book lies don't stand a chance anyway. Many of the truck-stops in the Northeast charge you for parking unless you're there less than four hours, or buy fuel, or, drop $25 in the store or restaurant. Your visit is recorded and the times monitored closely.

We can only hope the agency put in charge of these projects requests input from truckers regarding the development of their system. That's when as many truckers as possible gives input regarding the exit notification system I made comment about. And then hope they take that input and put it to good use. Other than that...we have to deal with the representatives authorizing this project - and we know how difficult that is.

If they just wait another month or so we won't need all this extra parking. With all the trucks going out of business there will be plenty of parking.

there wouldn't be as much problem getting in and out of truckstops if drivers had common sense.

the 2 worst truckstops in FL to park in is:

(1) Flying J in St. Augustine, FL. i go in there all the time and all the areas that say "NO PARKING" are filled before the parking spots are. i went in last week (approx 14:00)and there were 15 trucks parked in NO PARKING AREAS, but yet after working my way around the illegally parked trucks there were at least 50 spots open. GO FIGURE

(2) Pilot in Jacksonville (exit 329) when you go in there, there is only 1 lane to get out unless you go through fuel island,(which always has trucks) and the exit lane is always got a truck parked in it (most of time eating at the Mickey D's inside). Imagine that a trucker parking in the only way out of the truckstop.

U.S. Department of Transportation. Announced by Acting Federal Highway Administrator Jim Ray. This project comes from somewhere within the Federal DOT...and it's near impossible to get any info about what they do, or plan, until they announce it. I can say with certainty - derived from Jim Ray's press release - this project has been referenced with the Corridors of the Future Program, and will most likely play a roll in our government's intentions to toll existing interstates.
