High fuel prices, which are hitting the trucking industry hard, forced a Missoula trucking firm to lay off six full-time workers Tuesday.

Lonnie Wallace, president of Jim Palmer Trucking, said two recruiters and four maintenance-related personnel were let go from the trucking firm. The business employs 425 people.

“All we're doing is consolidating positions because of the economy,” Wallace said. “The high fuel prices have forced us to streamline operations.”

Wallace said diesel prices rose 8 cents a gallon last week, reaching a national average $4.727 per gallon.

Wallace denied that any leases had been terminated or any trucks have been repossessed.

“We didn't turn back any equipment or no leases have been terminated,” Wallace said.

He said the 44-year-old Missoula trucking firm hauls for a variety of clients, including Anheuser-Busch, Coors and Kroger.

Based on his readings of industry news, Wallace said more than 900 trucking firms in the nation reportedly had gone out of business or declared bankruptcy by the end of the first quarter.

Remember Jevic? All they were doing were cutting back and assured everyone that things would be fine.

Does the countdown begin for Jim Palmer Trucking now?

Hey Bull,
I posted a request on "bites the dust" thread. Is there a way to get a link that lists the companies that have gone under? Got some people (congressmen ) asking to see it.
I know, I almost told them where to go.

One of their customers are on the verge of being taken over by a foreign buyer!

Am I hearing the old saying " Last man to leave , turn out the lights"?

Rebel, If you got a congressmen or some other government official that wants to see a list, you might try getting a hold of OOIDA and see if they would have a list like that. According to an article i read a while back we lost 42,000 trucks in the 1st quarter of this year. So they must have an idea of where to get the Info.

Thanks for the tips, I'll check it out. I tried bankruptcy filings but there is no breakdown for different businesses. Just commercial/noncommercial

That 42,000 trucks was for the month of March only, and it resulted in 53,000+ drivers out of a job. The month of June another 62,000 American jobs were lost...the 6th straight month of lost jobs resulting in 438,000 for the first half of 2008.

I heard the other day it was over 500,000 jobs lost so far this year, but that is not in the trucking industry that is as a whole. whew, don't even get me started on Bush, I can't stomach the sight of that man anymore. I'd hate to start cussing again, lol

Remember us chatting on IM about info I received from a driver about this back in April? The only info we could find at the time stated a cut back only.

It's good to see ya posting. Hope all is well with you and yours.

That number is the number of lost jobs since Sept. 2006. The jobs gained and jobs lost adjusted to 528,000 jobs lost over this period, with an adjusted number for the first half of 2008 being 438,000 lost jobs.

The last time payrolls fell for at least six consecutive months was the 15-month slump through May 2002. The most recent recession lasted from March to November of 2001.

I just wonder, How MUCH does the economy have to falter, before our elected officials step in and say: HEY, WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING TO HELP THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.

Oil just jumped back up today, back to where it was last friday after dropping around $9-$10 per barrel the last 2 days.

For all the Trucks that went out of business there is STILL a lot of people taking "CHEAP RATES". I know that shippers are cutting back due to people not spending money but the rates should have gone up.

For example: i posted my truck in the Atlanta area for 2 days (over 800 loads per day posted on GL & IT load boards) My minimum rates were $1.75 +$.75 FSC per mile and i received over 100+ phone calls and NOT 1 load offered me $2.00 per mile or better. But yet fuel keeps rising.

Got an idea. I can't remember the details but back in the '70s or '80s the people got pissed at congress and sent them something in the mail-a whole bunch of'em.Was it tea bags?

In recognition of Phil Gramm's comments how about we all start sending everyone in congress a "wish" sandwich? You know, 2 pieces of bread and wish you had somethin in between. Cheap and to the point.
