Legislation to require speed limiters on heavy trucks that operate in the Canadian province of Ontario was approved Monday, June 16, in the Ontario Legislature.

The move by the government to require speed limiters on all trucks operating in the province, regardless of where they are based, does not sit well with the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association and many small-business truckers.

“We’re saddened that they decided to pass this legislation. We think it’s a bad decision for the truckers in Ontario and bad for U.S. truckers who do business in Ontario,” said Laura O’Neill, OOIDA government affairs counsel.

OOIDA is considering its options for fighting implementation of the regulation.

This is going to create some major problems for independents. This also may be the reasoning, instead of the fuel prices, behind Schneider, JB and other large trucking companies for turning their trucks down. They are already in compliance with that regulation and will be taking advantage of available freight to that region.

There will be loopholes exploited, just like when any other oppressive laws are written, folks figure out ways to circumvent, while complying.

Making a truck comply, while in the "People's Republic of Ontario" will not be a technical challenge, just like revin' it up again won't be a big deal when you leave.

Moreover, are they gonna' dyno every truck at the point of entry? I don't think so. On the the other-hand, if a driver is ticketed exceeding 65mph (I thought they used kph), then it will be a two edged sword. A speeding ticket, and, an out of compliance truck ticket. That is probably the real goal. Enhanced revenue collection.

The one thing you're forgetting about 2xR...that ticket will get ya expelled from Canada...black-balled...banned from returning. And you know how they are up there about that. I don't think loopholes are going to hold up on this one. Either you comply or you're out. I believe the passing of this law is an initial start to aid entities here in America to bring about the control they are attempting to accomplish. A large amount of our import/export activity is in that region.

Now if y'all are paying close attention to what's happening elsewhere as this is playing out...

American associations, agencies, special interest groups and our own government are pursueing aggressively the same type of legislation. If everyone don't wake up soon...our trucking industry will be governed as well. Once again, what is the true reason the big trucking companies are turning their trucks down? Is it because of fuel prices, or are they preparing for what's coming if we don't wake up and do something?

Anyone remember me speaking about the steps of NAU? For any social structure to survive - there must be a uniform, organized transportation structure. And their plan is to have complete control over it. Examples...TWIC - being employed by an approved company for west coast ports - DAC - redundant background checks. Either you conform or you're not allowed to be part of it. In Canada...another step has been completed. And it will be used to aid the bringing about of control being attempted here in America. This I see coming if Americans don't wake up to the realities of what's going on and do something to stop it.

If I won't go there, it will never be an issue for me. New England is the only foreign country I travel to, and I try to keep that to a minimum.

Oh, the various politicians, bureaucrats, and mega-fleet carriers can have the trucking industry any way they want it as long as the compensation level remains high enough to put up with their collective BS. When that falters, I'm outta' here. Meanwhile, I intend to be as valuable as I can be.

A point you guys are missing is that having this pass in Canada is just one step toward having it happen in the United States. This has been a developing issue for quite some time now, but given the attention that is placed on fuel prices, it is going unnoticed, much like many other issues facing this industry.

It is something that everyone had better stay on top of now, rather than waiting for it to happen here, because there are plenty special interest groups out there that are wanting it.

I feel safe in predicting that the fuel prices will be the catalyst that brings this issue to the forefront of US regulator's minds, and, will be the main talking point when the babble begins.

Couple fuel prices to the "Global Climate Change Crisis" and you have a winning combination. Who can argue against saving fuel, and the planet, all with a simple piece of legislation?

Fuel prices, and all the groups that constantly push for increased regulations on truckers in the name of "safety".
