Surcharge pass-through put into defense funding bill
By Steven Mackay

Owner-operators and other carriers hauling military freight have reason to celebrate going into the Memorial Day weeekend. An amendment to the 2009 Defense Authorization Bill stipulates that for any U.S. Department of Defense truck contract, the motor carrier or broker must pass any fuel surcharge on to the person responsible for paying the cost of the fuel and to disclose that surcharge.

The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association said it was grateful for the move, adding the amendment “will protect truckers and taxpayers from being exploited by intermediaries in the trucking industry.”

The amendment, introduced by Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.), passed on a voice vote without objection.

“We are thankful to Congress for making sure valuable taxpayer dollars are spent wisely to support our men and women in uniform and those who support them on the home front,” said Todd Spencer, OOIDA executive vice president. “Especially as we head into the Memorial Day holiday and think about the hard-working people that haul loads for the DoD.”

With diesel prices consistently rising, shippers now are paying more than ever in fuel surcharges.

Her again we get something that applies to MILITARY loads only. What about the other 100,000 owner ops out here that are getting screwed everyday, that don't haul military supplies???? Unbelievable that they even break this down into a military vs every other shipment in the country.

Well..If you listened to the house hearing..Our rep was explaining a fuel surcharge sample..he told de fazio that there was a load that paid 1200 plus 300 surcharge..the trucker hauling it received 700 bux..soo de fazio asked HOW the trucker was able to figure this out..Todd replied it was a government load and he figured it out AFTER the load was delivered..
Soo this told de fazio that the governemnt does the same thing..guess they needed to clean up their own act first gbefore going after the others..
