Surcharge pass-through put into defense funding bill

Owner-operators and other carriers hauling military freight have reason to celebrate going into the Memorial Day weeekend. An
amendment to the
2009 Defense Authorization Bill stipulates that for any U.S. Department of Defense truck contract, the motor carrier or broker must pass any fuel surcharge on to the person responsible for paying the cost of the fuel and to disclose that surcharge.
The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association said it was grateful for the move, adding the amendment “will protect truckers and taxpayers from being exploited by intermediaries in the trucking industry.”
The amendment, introduced by Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.), passed on a voice vote without objection.
“We are thankful to Congress for making sure valuable taxpayer dollars are spent wisely to support our men and women in uniform and those who support them on the home front,” said Todd Spencer, OOIDA executive vice president. “Especially as we head into the Memorial Day holiday and think about the hard-working people that haul loads for the DoD.”
With diesel prices consistently rising, shippers now are paying more than ever in fuel surcharges.
