High diesel fuel costs are fraying relations between a group of trucking firms delivering goods into Mexico and the independent drivers they hire on contract....

it's a hassle. i went across once. i arrived at the terminal in the morning around 8 am and after dealing with brokers and having tires changed out on trailer i finally got to cross the border around 5 pm. i got to go a whooping 5 miles across the border where i dropped and swapped then proceeded back over. they put tires back on this trailer and got it u.s. ready and i got to leave when it was ready the next day. it's interesting how much they strip the trailers before they cross the border.

who requires the trailers to be striped?
and who pays for this?

it's really quit simple crossing into mexico but when i crossed back it was question after question and i just saw this guy an hour ago. they look over paper work and all around trailer , inside and out and even in my cab. the best part of the deal is i did get a chance to eat some real mexican food on the other side. i walked down the street from where i did the trailer swap. it wasn't what i expected. i actually enjoyed it and met some pretty cool people. i would do it again. as i know what to expect next time.

i have no idea about their trucks as i didn't see one cross as i did. one at a time through the openings. it kinda looks like the exit ramp on a turn pike. same concept. the company a driver is who requires the trailer to be stripped. i asked why from one of the mechanics who was doing it and he told me if they didn't do this the trailers who come back with dry rotted tires that aren't any good. even the gromets from the glad hands are removed as they are sold for as much as 10$ across the border. they have to insert there own when trailers are swapped.

or even Texas.

no load or no reason to cross then it's not gonna happen. most of the trucking companies on this side along the border have business so they are allowed to fuel up when they are over there doing business. JB Hunt has a yard right there at the border. you can stand in there yard and look south and see the border and all the going ons there. from what i understood it wasn't really all that safe for americans to cross and go to bars then cross back over. seems we aren't all that welcomed there. thats from the mechanic. i found this odd as i didn't have any issues at all and i even walked about 100 yrds from the truck to eat where i was the only american there.

Just wondering it would sure screw up the border crossing if a bunch of trucks would cross at the same time. and buy cheap fuel at the same time.

being an independant question i don't know the answer to that. i was a company driver when i crossed. my company required it all to be changed out. i guess if you had some kind of business they wouldn't stop you but would probably ask alot of questions at the border. mexico probably wouldn't mind since you would be spending money there. good question. i would like to know the answer to this also.

they have automatic weapons so i don't think any driver would make it to far. plus does anybody really want to be detained in mexico ?

i was just going by that statement. it can be taken different ways. i think the biggest issues you would have is with the us customs crossing back/forth. i had a good time and all the rumors i heard about it being bad just wasn't true.
