And I submit to you that the main reason that no new refineries have been built since the 70's is because the oil industry wants to control the supply so as to keep the price high. Alex Jones has documentation on this at his sites infowars.com and prisonplanet.com
Congratulations "MaskedTerror". This is I believe, the first post that has pointed out the real cause of the high cost of gas and diesel fuel. It isn't about how many oil fields there are here in the US, or making OPEC pump more oil out of the ground to put on the market, it's about getting the damn oil companies to reinvest some of their hundreds of billions in profit in upgrading the old refineries, and building new refineries (possibly on old closed-down military bases) that can refine the capacity of gas & diesel needed by the people of this country at a decent and affordable price. We all know about all the oil that is in the ground waiting to be pumped. It doesn't matter if you pump it out of the ground by the boat load if you can't turn it into gas or diesel. Why do you think most of the oil gets sent to foreign countries.....They have the upgraded and new refineries...Stop worrying about how much oil is in the ground and start attacking the oil companies about re-investing the exorbitant profits like we initially planned with the BIG NATIONWIDE BOYCOTT. It seems that ya'll are flying in all kinds of different directions again. What happened to One Battle At A Time.....The Oil Companies are HUGE......The Government is HUGE.....you can't fight them both at the same time and win....pick one and fight that one and win.......Then go after the other if they still feel the need to fight after seeing the first one lose. Think about it everyone, and lets all get back on track instead of running in all different directions......I'm not saying that some of you don't have great ideas and I'm not saying they don't need to be done, just that you need to "Prioritize". How much do you really believe your gov. reps. are going to do against the oil companies when most or all of them have a big fat portfolio full of Oil Stocks? Half of the people I talk to on the street about a boycott of oil companies tell me, "Why would I want to hurt the oil company, I have stock in them?" These are just citizens like you and I. If they are hesitant in going after the oil companies, do you think your rich representatives are going to be anxious to. Just stop for a moment and think about these things. If you think I'm wrong, continue on as you are going. If you realize that I might be right, let's get back on track to our initial Battle and start building it BIG & STRONG so we can win it. Ya'll Have An Awesome Day!!

I applaude you for all you have become involved in to protect our country. I have great respect for anyone who stands up and fights for what they belive in. There is not one person on this forum that is not aware of how corrupt our government is, we're with you on that. You must realize you are on a "truckers forum" and we have been hardest hit by fuel prices. Our livelhoods are in serious jeopardy. Asking me to put my concerns aside for even a moment is not an option for me. Right now it is the fuel prices and the trucking industry it's self that it going to put my family living in the streets so right now this is my priority and not global warming or any other issues that is facing this country. All the other issues will still be here 6 months from now but unfortunately alot of truckers won't be. I don't mean to sound rude but like i said you are on a "truckers forum" and we are fighting for our lives here. If you choose to join our fight i welcome you, but if you expect me to fight for anything else at this point in my life, I'm afraid I can't do that. Right now my fight is for my families and friends survival.

This thread has gone downhill... The problem isn't a single thing and the rest of the world isn't the problem either. Their use has effected overall pricing, but "futures" are more of an issue than use. The biggest problems are the lack of American refineries and drilling. Our government controls much of the "red tape" involved in those two areas and they need to work to make things easier rather than not.

For our end, less actual use is our only hope to save individually, but we have recently seen this isn't having much bearing on pricing(it has gone up). We need to use our own oil and stop relying on foreign countries for now, while we make better use of our technology to further develop better methods to "move America" forward.

For the 1st time, tonight I saw a story on FOX NEWS(the one hated by the left), mentioning the vast oil supply which began this discussion. I haven't heard of it on any other news source till tonight... Of course, I rarely watch the evening news, etc.

Thank you lunachic......I know exactly what you're saying and I agree 100%. It's time to get back to doing what we initially set out to do......."One Battle At A Time" and pick a battle you have a chance of winning.......

Yes, yes, for sure and you betcha.
Speaking of Fox, try this on for size.

If we don't get tough, our enemies, along with greedy Americans, will drive oil prices so high a worldwide depression will ensue.
Next time you give your credit card to the gas guy and sign away another $60 or so, consider that both political parties have sold you out. For decades, no President or Congress would confront that fact that corrupt third-world countries control most of the world's oil supply and those nations are definitely not looking out for us.
In the 1970s, when poverty-stricken Brazil began a massive investment in sugar-based ethanol, the United States shrugged and did little research into alternative fuel.
But when OPEC choked the Carter administration, leading to long gas lines, plenty was said about weaning the USA off foreign oil. Nothing was done
Presidents Reagan, Bush the Elder, Clinton and Bush the Younger, all did little. There was no big push to conserve oil or to find another way to fuel the nation.

So now we're paying for their sins and, truth be told, some of our own as well. American liberals still don't want to drill in the Arctic Circle, still don't want more nuclear power (something that saves France and Sweden), and still oppose expanding refining capacity.

Conservatives still won't support government-mandated vehicle fuel efficiency, tighter controls on commodity speculators, and stricter oversight on American oil companies that are exploiting world tension.

And, sadly, we the people are not cutting down on our energy consumption.

With that kind of performance, expect more pain ahead. The oil companies will continue to make more profit than any business in the history of mankind, OPEC will continue to raise the price of oil, and China and India will continue to buy cartel oil at almost any price.

Both John McCain and Barack Obama promise to convene a kind of Manhattan Project to fast track alternative energy development. Since the situation is now desperate, I believe those guys. But economically viable alternative energy is years away and fraught with danger.

Just a year ago, some of us thought corn-based ethanol was the answer. But be careful what you wish for. Converting corn to fuel has caused food prices to rocket. You see, corn is used to feed livestock, so when the price of corn goes up, so does the cost of meat and poultry.

Meanwhile, Brazil would like to sell us some of their sugar-based ethanol. But Congress has imposed a tariff on it in order to help American farmers who, of course, are now paying record prices for oil. Is this a mess or what?

Here is the tough love solution:
  • All American made vehicles must get 30MPG by 2010 or pay a major tax surcharge to the government.
  • Oil and commodity speculators must put up 50% of their transactions in cash. That would weed out some of the gamblers who are manipulating the market.
  • American oil companies must supply the federal government with a written explanation every time they raise the price of gas and oil.
  • Americans would be asked to cut back at least 10% on leisure driving and not to buy gas at all on Mondays.
There is little we can do about OPEC as long as China, India and others are willing to pay what the traffic will bear. But here at home we can send powerful messages to the auto, gas, and commodities industries. If we don't get tough, our enemies, along with greedy Americans, will drive oil prices so high a worldwide depression will ensue.

Which, by the way, is exactly what the terrorists want.

If these investment Guru's are correct about all the crude under the Bakken Oil field is in fact true, why isn't the Bakken Oil Field getting more play, more press, more attention by Congress? Why isn't Congress demanding to know why the Bakken Oil Field is not being exploited by the oil industry if the oil is there? If the Bakken Oil Field isn't worth the time, if the evidence is contrived, and is in fact fraudulent why are the investment Gurus advising everyone including the family dog to invest in the Bakken Oil Field? If there is the 500 billion barrels of light sweet crude why isn't the oil industry crewing all over that field drilling like crazy? Why isn't Congress screwing us out of our tax money to build the needed pipeline to get this oil to the refineries like they did when they needed a pipeline in Alaska? Is it possible that the billions of dollars already invested in the Canadian tar sands and other expensive oil projects in the U.S. that the investors are not interested in shifting to a project that would in effect lower the price of crude on the world market? Is it possible that the U.S. debt to the Arabs are in fact the driving force behind the high price of OPEC crude, and is it possible our Congress have locked us into some agreement to continue to import OPEC crude at any cost to the citizen of the U.S? There are lots of questions, but Congress for some reason can't find the answers, or can they? Do they already know?

There are investors who follow every word spewed by large investment groups, and investment internet Gurus. It would appear that many investors are not at all interested it the fact that their investments in the oil industry is driving this nation into the ground, that they are in fact responsible for the pain that their follow Americans are suffering. They appear to not be interested in the fact that the high price of crude is quite literally murdering seniors who are living on fixed income, who can not pay for heating oil to heat their homes, as well as buy food, pay for their meds, pay their rent. Children are not getting the education they deserve to compete for high paying jobs (so we import educated workers from other countries), because money that would be directed to schools and social services are now being diverted to pay for fuel needed to maintain city infrastructures. Many investment groups consider the repercussions of greed has being nothing more collateral damage on the way to become richer than god. Many Congressmen on the hill are saying that we are only crying wolf, that it is not their fault that they couldn't see beyond their collaboration with the oil industry, and the Arabs.

What continues to amaze me is that millions of Americans' are not besieging White House and the Capital building demanding blood in exchange for the grief that Cheney, Bush and Congress are making then suffer.
