Independent truckers strike hurting area businesses

'Heart of Texas produce' in Waco uses about nine independent drivers every week to supply eight hundred area clients with $19,000 worth of all types of fruits and veggies daily. "Anything, apples, oranges, bananas, lettuce, tomatoes, potatoes, carrots." Ken Tucker with Heart of Texas Produce said.

But, the companies expected load did not arrive Tuesday morning because the drivers parked their trucks and the products may not arrive for days. "We found out Tuesday that our valley load that's supposed to arrive Tuesday is now not going to arrive until Thursday." Tucker said.

They are already out of certain foods. They can get it from other sources but that will take time and spell at least a two dollar increase per bundle. It is a trickle down affect over at TSTC; where their culinary arts school relies on 'Heart of Texas Produce.' with produce running low this week the head chef will have to adjust.

"Then I've go to look at my students and I've go make an alternative course and use another product that we might have on shelf." TSTC Culinary Instructor Mark Schneider said.

The school also sells meals twice a week for money that too is in jeopardy this week. The strike is supposed to continue until Thursday right now no way of knowing how many independent drivers are taking part.

Yeah, I have tried to discuss this with others on non-trucking forums. Some of those people are irritated that their freight wasn't picked up. All that some of these people seem to be concerned with is how it is affecting them personally. When you try to explain to them all the things that are hurting truckers, the things they seem to just assume the truckers should just deal with, they aren't too concerned with listening.

It has really become a "me" world over the past several years.

That's exactly right BW. Most people don't care about anything that isn't directly getting in their pocket or interfering with their leisure lifestyle. If it finally starts to effect them, they then say, "Why the hell didn't someone do something about this before now?". By that time, it's someone elses fault, not theirs. Most are being real quick to blame this whole thing on the trucker again. They say we are just whining and crying about something that everyone else is dealing with and have no problem. I'm about sick of that mentality. It's about time all these preppie assholes suffer along with us for a change.

It's LONG overdue for the trucker to remove themselves from the bottom of the food chain...
