Senate to Opt for 18-Month Extension of Highway Program

The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, picking up on a recommendation by the Obama administration, is going to introduce legislation to extend the current highway program for 18 months, rather than draft a substantive, six-year reform bill this summer.

Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., chairman of the committee, said yesterday that she knows that federal highway program needs transformational change, but she will not move in that direction until there is agreement on how to pay for it. She said she will mark up an 18-month extension bill with no policy changes the week of July 20.
