It took 15 hours of clean up, but southbound Interstate 75 at Ezzard Charles Drive finally reopened to traffic Wednesday evening after a five-vehicle crash and paint spill closed a stretch of one of the nation’s busiest interstates.“The extent of the spill (created) the challenge,” said Elaine Baker, traffic manager for Artimis, which monitors the highways. “The fact that it was a liquid spill made it a little more difficult than if it was boxes or something you could scoop up. They literally had to scrape it off the roadway.”
The crash happened around 4:40 a.m. near Ezzard Charles Drive. Mark R. Iannuzoo, 41, of Liberty Township was driving a van when he lost control and moved into another lane. A tractor-trailer and a box truck that had stopped on the interstate because of the crash were then struck by a FedEx tractor-trailer, police said.
Three 55-gallon drums of paint spilled onto the interstate from the FedEx truck driven by David Coomes, 41, of Richland, Ind.
Gwinner was the only one injured. She was treated and released from University Hospital.
Iannuzoo and Coomes were charged with failure to control. Iannuzoo was also charged with driving under suspension.
