How Do You Know A Trucker Is Safe To Drive?
TULSA, OK --Thousands of semis travel Oklahoma roads every day. So how do you know if the men or women behind the wheel are fit to handle a big rig?
There are certain criteria the drivers have to meet before they get in the driver's seat. A big piece of getting a commercial driver's license in Oklahoma takes place in a doctor's office. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration requires all drivers who take their trucks across state lines to pass a physical exam every two years.
Dr. Gregory Brooks at Concentra Urgent Care performs between 50 and 100 physicals every week.
"Take it very serious," Brooks said of the physical exam.
Dr. Brooks says the physical looks at blood work, reflexes, as well as vision and hearing.

Unless a company uses an unbiased, third party, medical examiner, there is ample opportunities for medical certificate fraud. If a driver goes to his own Doctor to obtain the exam, there is a very good chance the personal relationship will cause the Dr. to fudge just a little to keep the driver qualified. If he gets disqualified, then fired, the driver will loose his insurance coverage, and, the good Dr. will likely loose an insured customer.

Then there are the quacks, who are at the bottom of the medical food chain who are happy to take the fifty bucks and certify a driver. They will slap him on the back, as he's leaving, and tell him to send his buddies by for their exam.

If a company is smart they will contract with a medical service provider who will make sure the company has only safe, healthy, drivers in their pool.

More and more doctors are less willing to let anything slide on physicals due to liability issues . But there are still many physicians that don't know how to give physicals .
