No problem, I am not lying, this is the only two companies I have ever seen do this though.
I figure it is a training thing maybe....That way when you jump up and your running behind you don't have to remember to turn them back on.

I used to get irritated, mainly at truck stops around the big cities, when before I could even have time to come to a stop and turn on my flashers before backing into a spot, some idiot would have to pop off because "Schneider" was backing up.

I have been at a truckstop and watched owner operators and small company drivers look like rookies trying to get into an easy spot, and nobody says crap. If it is a JB, SWIFT, Schneider, USXpress, etc.... the CB goes crazy with idiots.

think about this for a bit.

most trucks (and cars) have automatic "on" headlights.........right...??

on big rigs, you apply the parking brakes, the lights go off.....with me so far....??

now, on ALL tractors i am familar with and what I DROVE, you apply the parking brakes, but the engine is now on a timer to shut down, since the brakes are applied....

UNLESS, you bump-up the cruise control to maintain engine idle......

NOW, if any of those trucks had or have a malfunctioning cruise control switch, then these drivers MAY NOT BE applying the tractor-parking brake, just the trailer brakes....

and why pray-tell would i bring this up......??

well i never was a swift or jb driver.............but i had to NOT apply my parking brakes to maintain engine idle...........several times in fact, as my company did not repair my cruise control, and i needed my sleep..........

this is at least one explaination why they might be leaving thier lights on.....

that's because in some instances, the CB......IS AN IDIOT BOX....!!!!

this explains why some drivers spend so much money on "CB TOYS"...........

instead of spending that money on something useful like food, or road maps....or even a shower (or two).................

This could be the very reason..I don't know why you would want to set just your trailer brake to park with, if anything I would and did just set the tractor brake whenever I parked. For the simple fact that in winter the trailer brakes will freeze, I know so will the tractor brakes but they will brake loose most of the time, the trailer won't won't with out beating on them. Just the way I learned to do it.

i BOLDED your comment......

some WILL OR WOULD do this if the engine shuts off once the tractor brakes are applied..........AND they need heat or A/C, and the cruise control doesn't work..................on most of (if not all) tractors, since about the 1990's, the engine will shut off when the brake knobs are set for parking.........especially the "yellow" tractor knob..............and by the way, many trucks now have "daytime running lights" as well when the yellow know is pushed in.....follow me now....????

and as i have said, i have done this too so that i could get my sleep. if parked on an incline or decline, then chock the wheels.......

^ That's ingenious. Where I work at now we do direct store deliveries, kinda like pepsi and coke or any of the beer companies. And all of our trucks have an idle shutdown. I never thought of that.

This must be a feature put on by the trucking companies...

At least Freightliner,Volvo,International,Mack, didn't have this on from the factory because 2 years ago that is what I did for a living was haul piggy backs, and they would idle all night and all day with the tractor brake set.

I am not arguing with you, why must every thing be an argument to you?

I am stating that the trucks I pulled from the factory did not HAVE this feature.
I pulled Freightliner and Volvo and Mack and International from the FACTORY and none had this feature.

As for the trucks you drove, maybe it did come from the factory like this I don't know I probably did not drive YOUR trucks from the factory.

But I DO KNOW for a FACT the Freightliners and the Macks and the Volvos and the International trucks I picked up from the Factory did NOT have this.

Geesh, go drink a beer, watch a game or something you are getting irritable in your old days..

This has been something available from the manufacturer for a while now, just not mandatory until recently. However, beginning with 2007 models, and I think it is mandatory on 2008 models, even with the tractor brakes released, it still shuts down within no more than 15 minutes, 5 minutes with them applied.

In my 2007, the truck will shut off once I set the brakes within 5 minutes, or if I am stopped for 15 minutes in traffic, it will still shut off.

"Moose"...........i think we were pretty much talking originally about the reason why the headlights stay on, as this is what someone (WoT) was refering to at truckstops..

they are called "daytime running lights" as found on most 4 wheelers these days. turn on the ignition, the lights come on.

with big rigs (i have driven), once the yellow brake knob (parking brake) in pushed in, the headlights come on and stay on.

at the truckstops, applying the brakes of course shuts off the lights, but if the engine is still idling, this will also shut down the engine.

now, of course, if we were to "bump-up" the cruise control, this keeps the engine from shutting down....

BUT, if the cruise control doesn't work, the engine WILL shut down....

which lead me to say, that if the cruise is broken, the driver "might be" not applying the parking brake, so the engine can continue to idle, but this will also allow the headlights to stay on as well.

Yes. I hate that!!!

Especially when you're tired as hell, and can't find parking anywhere! Very frustrating.

This is solved by that first knob. It solves all of that. IF they have something to say, they can walk over to you. lol.

Listening to the idiots that target the drivers of big companies has become comical now for me. I got my start 17 years ago with a big company, and worked my way through a couple more big companies over the course of my first year on the road. I remember listening to the crap back then, only then it was the true old timers who just despised the large companies. Today, it is the supertruckers who have been on the road for 5 years and hiding behind their cab curtains who are talking crap.

Anyhow, after my initial start in this industry, the rest of my time up until this year has been as an owner/operator or driving a Long Nose 379 for a small company. I got used to pulling into truckstops, and backing in with drivers in front of me, or beside the spot I was backing into getting on the radio and letting me know if I had plenty of room or not.

Now, I am on the road with a big company, and I either get complete silence when I am set up to back in, or I get the harrassement by Joe the Supertrucker. Personally, I find it funny because I know it is about the last spot left in the truck stop, and if it was one of those guys who are talking crap who seen the spot, they probably would have just drove on past it and parked on the ramp with their trailer looking like it was about to tip over all night, and then being woke up by a Arkansas State Trooper who is giving them a nice ticket for breakfast.

but yeah, to them, I am just a rookie in slow red truck.

oh yes that just irratates me to no end. i think it should be illegal for them to do that. if they back up all the way in i have been known to back up in the spot and block them in for a period of time while i have run in to shower and eat. they are so pissed by the time i get back but i just inform them that what they did is so rude and not right to other drivers with trailers and there other places for them to park the bobtail.
