I found this article online today!

Quote:
A tip from a driver led to the arrest of a truck driver accused in a road rage incident in Volusia County. Troopers got a call Saturday that a semi driver had forced a car off Interstate 4 between DeLand and Daytona Beach.
The caller said the semi drove recklessly to get in front of a car and then slammed on his brakes. The driver got out of the truck and approached the car, but the driver was able to drive off. Troopers caught the truck on Interstate 95 north of Daytona Beach and arrested the driver, Juan Garcia of New York. Florida Highway Patrol wanted to remind drivers that they can call Star-FHP if they witness any type of crime on the road.
In my opinion, if that driver is indeed guilty of road rage, then the federal government should strip him of his CDL for no less than 5 years. I happen to see similiar things when I am on the road. I do not see it often, but when I do I make the call to 911 myself. Unsafe and Wreckless operation of a commercial vehicle is uncalled for in any circumstance.

I agree with you. Infact I think that any arrest for road rage should have so pretty stiff penalties. Using a vehicle as a potential weapon should fall under the terriorist threat laws and such like that.

If they don't pull that driver's CDL then there is something seriously wrong with our system.. I agree with SandMike.. and in addition.. IMHO if you have these kinda issues then you shouldn't be truckin' anyway.

I agree with you guys but I see this as an additional sign of our times. More and more people cannot handle what for those of a previos generation was normal stress because of the kind of society we live in today.

Well, I can honestly say that the stress from the last generation to the new generation is ten fold. The only difference is that older generation drivers have been adjusting with the times, year after year and the new drivers do not have that advantage. It was hard and stressful to be a trucker years ago sure, but even the older drivers will tell you that there are alot more people and problems on the road now due to our census, thus creating an even harder environment for new drivers to begin their careers compared to the last generation.

There is one thing that I do not think is stressed enough in the training process of new drivers, and that's respect and curtousy. Most of the training programs now are focused on Getting the driver in and out on the road, period. All these major trucking companies that have their own training programs are cutting each others throats behind the scenes. So, the more trucks(drivers) they can produce and get rolling, the more freight they can take away from their competition. There are very few companies whom actually care about their drivers, and I believe that the drivers get too much frustration from their company not giving a $I-Iit. I also think that reflects how the drivers operate on their daily duties.

I know that this is not the only problem causing the new generation to act and perform like they do, but it is definately a contribution.

BigMACK, You have a very good perception of the problem, but lets not forget the mindset of the average Joe out there on the roads.Tempers flair when you have 3.00 per gallon fuel plus 500.00 per month mortgage plus massive layoffs and lets not forget the war and the patriot act. Please be curtious to your fellow American, he has a lot on his mind as do we truckers. peace

I think the generation thing is only a bit true. Older truckers have had LOTS of pressure just different ones. Like no cell phones, or ways to contact your loved ones. No laws about driving times and companies could force you to drive endless hours. No GPS if you were lost. No quail-comm to talk with dispatch if you had load problems. Driver pick up times were in the hours when I started working at wnc 18 years ago. Now we avg 15 mins. per driver. I think it is the mind set of the new drivers before they even get in the truck. They think it will be easy, they are just "Steering Wheel Holders" They are not real drivers to me.

We are also seeing the first generation of "entitleds" entering adulthood. They feel entitled to everything and don't want to work. They want it all handed to them and when work enters the equation they get mad.

I think any driver who is convicted of road rage should have their licenses pulled and revoked.
