Ahhh, RickG...minimum rate/mile is regulating freight if this is to be applied across the board. I understand what you're saying, but what you're suggesting applies to a company driver situation...not O/O's or independent's.

We don't need regulated rates . Would that really benefit the drivers? What we need is a minimum rate per mile for drivers plus mandatory detention pay . A decent wage would keep safe , experienced drivers behind the wheel.

It's a prickly question isn't it?
Most of us don't like the gov't stickin it's nose in everything........but sometimes we all could use some help.
Do keep in mind our Constitution does enumrate the power to Congress regarding interstate commerce.

I personally don't think the Government needs to get involved IN ANYTHING.They just cause nothing but grief and havoc.
Do you understand the nature of a self-employed individual? That type of requirement is unconstitutional and no intelligent O/O or Independent, remaining clasified as self-employed, would agree to that intrusion into his business. As a self-employed individual, the bottom line is his pay, and his ability as an O/O or independent is what dictates how small or big that bottom line is. But when you have low-ballers in the industry...no O/O or Independent will stand a chance of survival. That's just a fact of business if you attempt to compete against low-ballers without a bigger bankroll than they have.
My advice...seek specialized sectors of the industry and let the low-ballers kill themselfs off. Because that very game requires taking a loss and out-lasting the competition.

When it comes to interstate commerce...there must be a certain level of involvement. Otherwise we'd have states screwing each other...and of course it would be the trucker that would get the short end of that stick.
Our Constitution enumerates the power to Congress to ensure interstate commerce is regulated among the several states. The problem is the majority have lost the understanding of that power, and Congress has taken that power to unconstitutional levels because of that loss of understanding.

If the government had their way, they would regulate the air we breathe.Even though the pollution doesn't make it easy.We pay the government too much in taxes, and if freight was regulated. It would give another taxable situation, that would break the O/O or the independent driver to where the only people driving would be the big conglomerate companies. Look at insurance, repair cost, fuel. All of these are regulated to a point. And the big companies get a "bulk" rate insurance package, as well as a "bulk"fuel rate. Repairs. They have mechanics. Screw regulation, and keep it a free enterprise,at a competitive rate..
keep on rollin. no matter what it is!!!
