The truck was lying on its side in the ditch with all 14 wheels exposed to the overcast sky.
The truck had been heading north towards Labrador along Route 389, the largely dirt highway that runs from Baie-Comeau to the provincial border just past Fermont and provides the residents of that Quebec town and all the people of Labrador with their only road link to the rest of Canada. By the look of the tracks left behind, the driver had simply been trying to slowly pull his vehicle away from the centre of the road, but he apparently hadn’t reckoned on the softness of the shoulder.
Clearly, once the right wheels began to sink there was no way to bring the truck back onto the harder surface. Several hours after the accident the driver was returned to the scene. He climbed onto the cab of his truck, opened the driver side door until it pointed straight up, and lowered himself inside.
The last time he’d been there he would have been hanging sideways in his seatbelt, probably shocked by the accident, but no doubt feeling thankful nothing worse had happened.
