18-wheeler driver involved in fatal wreck says she 'dozed off'

18-wheeler driver involved in fatal wreck says she 'dozed off'

The driver of an 18-wheeler that struck and killed a family of four in Magee on June 23 told police she had fallen asleep at the wheel before the collision, according to the police incident report obtained this week by The Clarion-Ledger.
According to the incident report, Mary Gibbs with JNJ Express in Memphis "dozed off" before hitting a van that had stopped at a red light on U.S. 49.
Representatives with JNJ Express did not return calls for comment on Tuesday. It is unknown how many hours Gibbs had been on the road before the wreck. Federal regulations restrict truckers to 11 hours driving in a 14-hour period before having to rest.

I have dozed off while driving. Before the rumble strips, falling off the shoulder of the roadway (if you're lucky) will wake you with a shot of adrenaline. I must say, a person rarely knows they're going to doze off. We all drive sleepy, sometimes. You think you can stand the pressure, then, it just happens.

Ever parked behind another truck to catch a combat nap in the driver's seat, then wake up looking at the rear of that truck thinking you are about to die. You hope no one noticed your panicked attempt to stop a parked truck.

How about being sitting behind the wheel when parked and thinking you're starting to roll backward when the truck next to you pulls forward ?

She was most likely pushed by a POS dispatcher or company to make load on time, and then will get the only blame for accident. When are officials gonna start realizing the total hypocracy of driving 'OFF THE BOOKS'

I have dove out of the sleeper to stop my truck, only to realize I had only been laying down for about 15 minutes.

Likely a tragic combination of a dispatcher pressuring for OTD and a shipper that took hours to load the truck. Yet ultimately, it is the driver that has control of that wheel and must make the safe decision.
